Transformer oil: The unsung hero of power transmission

The humble oil inside a transformer might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think about electricity, but it plays a vital role in keeping the power flowing. In fact, it’s more than just lubricant – it’s a multi-talented superhero with three key superpowers:

1. Insulation: Transformer oil acts as a shield against electricity, preventing current from jumping between the transformer’s internal components. Without this insulating barrier, sparks would fly, potentially causing damage and outages.

2. Arc suppression: When high voltage electricity flows, tiny electrical discharges called corona discharges can occur. These discharges can eventually lead to arcing, which is like a mini-lightning bolt inside the transformer. The oil helps suppress these discharges, ensuring smooth and safe operation.

3. Cooling: Transformers generate a lot of heat as they convert voltage. The oil acts as a coolant, circulating around the core and coils to absorb the heat and carry it away. This prevents the transformer from overheating, which could lead to damage or failure.

But being a superhero isn’t easy. Transformer oil faces some tough challenges:

  • High temperatures: It needs to remain stable and effective even under the extreme heat generated by the transformer.
  • Chemical stability: It shouldn’t break down or react with the transformer’s other components.
  • Dielectric strength: It must maintain its insulating properties even under high voltage stress.
